Autoimmune Hepatitis

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the liver, causing inflammation and damage. This condition can lead to scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) and, if untreated, may result in liver failure. The exact cause of autoimmune hepatitis is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), abdominal discomfort, and joint pain. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to check for liver enzymes and specific antibodies, along with imaging studies and liver biopsy in some cases. Treatment often involves the use of immunosuppressive medications, such as corticosteroids and azathioprine, to reduce inflammation and prevent further liver damage. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, many individuals with autoimmune hepatitis can lead normal lives.
